City Walls and Castles

Adding a little bit of Cities & Knights strategy to help boost the base game.

The Story

In 2005 Kosmos released "Atlantis: Szenarien & Varianten" in the German and Czech markets. The game was not released by any other languages.

Atlantis was also bundled with the 10th Anniversary Gold Box Catan base game. The set featured a number of really good add-ons for the base game, some of which were new and others were adaptations of earlier releases.

The City Walls variant was taken from Cities and Knights and modified for use in the base game, while the Castles on Catan was sourced from "Das Buch zum Spielen", the amazing set of Catan tools released in German only in 2000.

Pieces Needed

  • 6 x Castles
  • 7 x City Walls

Designed to add into the European Catan base game using plastic pieces, the two scenarios can still be easily adapted to work with the English base game too.

Instructions/Rules

Overview

Both City Walls and Castles can be used with the base game. They are two seperate scearios that give different ways of adding protection from the robber.

They are not designed to both be used at the same time, so this page is an either/or offer. Both are listed as they are great additions to the base game.

Castles

  • Background Story:
A Cataner will often lament that with the Robber roaming around, their resources are never safe. Sometimes, a player wishes for a safe, protected place, where the Robber dares not set foot.
  • Preparation:
The game is set up following normal rules. The 6 castles are placed beside the board.
  • Rules
The game is played using the normal rules with the following additions:
    • As soon as a player has revealed their second Knight Development card, they may decide to return them to the Development card pile in exchange for a castle.
    • The player may place the castle adjacent to any of their settlements or cities. The castle is placed around the number chit of the Resource hex.
    • A field with a castle is now safe from the Robber (i.e. the Robber may no longer be placed here). The castle may not be placed on the same hex on which the Robber is currently placed.
    • The decision to place the castle must be immediately after revealing the second Knight Development card, not after. After this moment, the castle may no longer be placed.
    • Castles may be built until the supply runs out. A play may also build castles with a third and fourth knight following the rules above.

City Walls

  • Background Story:
Isnʼt it annoying – players build cities to increase their prosperity and then the Robber attacks and half their cards are removed! Protect your cities (and your resource cards) by building a city wall!
  • Preparation:
The game is set up following normal rules. The 7 city walls are placed beside the board.
  • Rules
The game is played using the normal rules with the following additions:
    • Normally, when a “7” is rolled, a player is forced to cut the number of resource cards they hold by half. A city wall increases that limit by two for each city wall they own.
    • A city wall costs 2 Brick Resource cards to build and can only be built around cities.
    • To build a city wall, pay the two Resource cards and pick up a city wall token from the side of the board and place it under one of your cities.
    • Now when a “7” is rolled, the player may hold 9 Resource cards safely in their hand. With two city walls, they may hold 11 Resource cards; etc.
    • City walls may be built as long as they are available in the supply.
    • If a player loses a city with a city wall, then the wall is also lost (this can occur only when playing with other variants, such as “Volcanoes of Catan”).
    • The first player to earn 11 or more Victory Points wins the game.
