Repel the Dragon
A Dragon scenario for use with Cities & Knights
The Story
Pieces Needed
- 1 x Volcano Hex
- 1 x Dragon Token
- 30 x Gem tokens
This scenario requires the Catan base game and the Cities & Knights expansion.

Instructions/Rules
With this C&K scenario the Dragon replaces the robber and attacks when a 7 is thrown. The volcano replaces the desert. If you have no volcano hex, you can use the desert hex instead.
The Dragon Movement
The landing hex is determined by one of following three methods:
- a 20 sided dice and number the hexes. If the numbers 1, 7 and 20 are thrown it would mean the dragon does not wake and the island is safe from an attack.
- by using the standard dice and the numbers on the volcano to work out direction and distance. The red dice decides which number on the volcano is used the white dice is the number of hexes outwards the dragon moves. If the number is high when the dragon reaches the coast he re-enters the island on the mirror side.
- or by allowing the person throwing the 7 to decide which hex the dragon attacks.
Fight or Flee!
Each player with a settlement adjoining the hex individually chooses whether to fight the dragon or flee to safety.
If a player chooses not to fight you lose two cards at random from your hand.
If they choose to fight their strength is determined using the total number of active knights they own anywhere on the board. The dragons strength is decided by the roll of a six sided dice AFTER a decision is made to fight.
If you fight the dragon and win you gain precious gems from the Dragon's horde (that equal one VP) and you take a resource card of your choice. If you fight and lose you lose one knight (or downgrade a knight by one level) and you lose a number of resources based on how big a loss you have. For example if the Dragon throws a five and you have two active knights, you lose three cards at random (5-2=3)
After the fight
The dragon remains on the hex until the player who awakened it starts their next turn (when it returns to the volcano), or until another 7 is thrown if thrown earlier.
There are a total of 10 victory points available for conquering the Dragon. Once depleted, the Dragon is vanquished and leaves the game. After this has happened whenever a "7" is thrown a player takes one random card from any of the other players. Halving hands with too many cards still takes place too.
The game ends when someone reaches 16 Victory Points.
