The Specialists (and Catanimals)

Two ways to add more to your game by specialising in a resource

The Story

The Specialists in Atlantis allow a Cataner who specialises in the production of one or more resources to gain additional Victory Points. The player who is a specialist in collecting specific resources may also receive a special advantage.

Catanimals is based on a similar theme.

Instructions/Rules

Catan: Atlantis – The Specialists:

The game is set up following normal rules. The 5 Specialist cards are placed beside the board. The game is played using the normal rules with the following additions:
  • Each settlement or city brings in “special points” for its owner for specific Resource hexes. These represent the expertise of the player in collecting these resources.
  • A settlement contributes 1 point for each Resource hex, while a city contributes 2 points. Example: A city at the intersection of two Forest hexes and one Pasture hex contributes 4 Lumber points and 2 Wool points.
  • As soon as a player earns 4 points for any one Resource, they receive the associated specialist card. Each card is worth 1 Victory Point.
  • The specialist cards always belong to the player with the most specialist points. If two or more players have the same amount of specialist points, the card is returned to the side of the table until a player has the most cards.
  • Resource Collection - Choose the optional rule your table prefers, but not both.
Option One: At the end of their Production Phase, a player may collect one Resource card for every corresponding specialist card they possess for free. The drawn Resource card must be the same resource indicated on the specialist card.
Option Two: Whenever a "7" is rolled, a player may collect one resource matching each specialist they currently hold.
  • The first player to earn 12 or more Victory Points (Base Game) wins the game. A player may also win the game if they possess 4 or more specialist cards

or for a simpler method of play you can use these rules

Catanimals

  • CATANIMALS
  • For each settlement adjacent to a resource hex, you receive one "resource point" of that hex type. A city gives 2 resource points. Special 2:1 harbors also give 1 point for a settlement, 2 for a city. For example, a city built on an intersection of an ore hex, a brick hex and a lumber harbour, gets 2 ore, 2 brick and 2 lumber resource points.
  • The first player to get 3 points of a resource type gets the corresponding Catanimal, and each Catanimal is worth 1 victory point. Similar to the longest road rules, they can be stolen if the player is surpassed in resource points of a type.
  • The victory points required to win the base game are increased to 12.
If using the newer Catanimals, you may also like to play The Plushie Robber Sheep too. This is similar to THE CLOTH THIEVES (already listed on this site) but with simpler rules for younger, or newer, players.
  • Whenever a player has one of their cards stolen as a result of a robber movement, the player takes the Robber Sheep Plushie from whoever has it at the time.
  • Owning the Robber Sheep plushie increases your hand limit to 10 cards instead of 7 next time the robbers attack.
  • The plushie sheep robber does NOT gain the holder an extra victory point.
