Toll Roads
Allowing trapped players expansion... at a cost
The Story
Players often find themselves trapped by others who have blocked any form of expansion. Toll roads allows blocked players to carry on expanding if the other player agrees to a toll road.
Pieces Needed
- 3 x Toll Roads per player/colour
- 40 gold tokens
The toll roads use the official Catan Viking pieces available at the German Catan shop. Alternate toll roads can be easily made too.
Instructions/Rules
Starting off
Each player starts with three toll roads and zero gold coins.
Buying/Selling Gold
- A player can trade ONE resource card of any type for two gold coins whenever a toll has to be paid.
- Only on their turn any player can trade four gold coins for a resource of their choosing
Playing/Requesting a Toll Road
- Each player has three toll roads they can play at any time.
- A toll road can only be built where an existing normal road is already in place.
- There is no cost to upgrade a road to a toll road.
- A player does not have to agree to build a toll road if they choose not to.
- Any player wanting a toll road can only offer gold coins to buy access. No resources, commodities, or other offers can be traded for a toll road.
- Once in place, each time the number on either side of the toll road is thrown, a toll of one gold coin must be paid to the owner of the toll road.
- Once granted a toll road can only be removed if the toll user cannot pay the gold toll on any turn.
- If the player granting a toll road has a settlement or city (or knight in C&K) located at either end of the toll road, the person buying access can build through at this point. They can only do this at this location - the standard rules apply on all non-toll road locations.
Additional Rules
- A toll road counts towards the longest road length for both players.
- All normal road rules apply in terms of placement.
- A settlement, city or knight blocks both roads and toll roads.
- Any building (roads, settlements, factories or cities) either side of the toll road remains in place after the toll road is removed.
