Catan Gallery Edition 2008

Game Description from Catan

The Gallery Edition game does not appear in the current Catan.com ludography, but Board Game Geek says:

"In the Settlers of Catan Gallery Edition, the award-winning game is simplified and reduced in price to allow for quick play and introduction to casual players. The Settlers of Catan are once again traveling through the lands of Catan, racing to develop their settlements.

Players are now able to gain the flavour of the popular board game within 60–90 minutes with simplified rules that allow quick game setup and learning. The Catan board game continues to have the popular modular board and the variety of strategic options available that made the original Settlers of Catan game so popular."

My own comments on the game

This game uses a rectangular board that is correctly shown on the box itself (unlike the earlier "Simply Catan"). One great feature of the board is the inclusion of scoring numbers on the frame to track player progresss, as well as circular score markers in each colour.

A noticble change in this version, that would be carried forward in future Family Editions, is that the numbers are now printed on the hexes. While regular Catan players would be upset this reduces customisation, these unexpandable games were always about simplicity and ease of set-up. Printed numbers on double sided hex strips still means games can vary, but the set up time is a fraction of a proper Catan game. The harbour positions are fixed.

The playing pieces are the traditional wooden Catan shape, but made from a good quality plastic material.
