Setup and Rules
Setup:
Use a 4×7 board setup to save time, then simply place the “8 lumber” and “6 grain” ON TOP of the Seafarers edge pieces. Place the 3:1 ports around the outer edge of the island, as shown. Place the remaining six Special Ports beside the board (Ore 2:1, Brick 2:1, Grain 2:1, Lumber 2:1, Sheep 2:1, Sheep 2:1)
Crater-portsVolcano:
See Volcano rules here. Play with the gold-producing variant. No player may start the game on the volcano.
Rules:
- No bonus points are awarded for settling on the volcano. However, players do have an extra incentive to reach the volcanic island in the crater lake. As soon as a settler places a settlement on the Volcano, he may add a port of his choice from the stock beside the board. He then places it on one of the two pathways adjacent to his volcanic settlement.
- Reaching the Volcano: Do not use ships in this scenario. Players may build a “bridge” to the island for 1 lumber + 1 brick + 1 ore. A bridge counts toward Longest Road, and it cannot be destroyed. In addition:
- A player may only build one bridge per game.
- A player may only build one building on the volcanic island.
- The Distance rule must be observed when placing settlements on the volcanic island (i.e. it is limited to three settlers at a time, perhaps even two). The Distance rule includes settlements on the other side of the water.
- Volcanoes also destroy your ports: In the event that a volcano removes your settlement from the island, your adjacent port is also removed from the board and returned to the stock. You may rebuild later and again place that port, or place a different one. However, with more room now on the volcanic island, it may open up new opportunities for other settlers to build. If another settler builds on the island before you have a chance to rebuild, they may take any port of their choice from the stock (including the one you used to own).
Credit: This map is based upon an idea from Mike Schneider with an extra twist to port flexibility added by Catan Maps.
